Game Theory Academy (GTA) and West Oakland Woods (WOW) Farm offer local high school students a three-month intensive internship, where they will learn about sustainable farming, ecology, leadership, and small business operations.
Launched in 2012, The WOW Farm Youth Entrepreneurship Program uses urban gardens as a classroom for teaching youth how to run a business, under the mentorship of experienced entrepreneurs, educators and farmers. The business produces and delivers organically-produced root vegetables, leaf vegetables, herbs, and flowers.
The WOW Farm Youth Entrepreneurship Program’s objectives are to:
- Offer meaningful, paid employment to teens in West Oakland.
- Provide youth associates with a hands-on practicum in business management and sustainable organic farming which they can apply to future business and leadership opportunities in their community.
- Support Oakland businesses that invest in the social values associated with the food and flowers they sell.
- Promote a model for urban farming that leverages the talents and energy of young residents to boost the local economy.
